Change and the Moon An Ancient Legend

Introduction

In Chinese mythology, Chang'e is a legendary figure known for her journey to the moon. This ancient tale has been passed down through generations, captivating hearts with its romantic and adventurous elements.

The Goddess of the Moon

According to legend, Chang'e was once a mortal woman who lived during China's Han Dynasty (206 BCE - 220 CE). She was renowned for her beauty and kindness. One day, she accidentally consumed an elixir of immortality meant for another person. As soon as she swallowed it, she soared into the sky and landed on the moon.

Her husband, Houyi, shot down nine suns that were threatening Earth with his magical bow and arrows. For his heroic deeds, he became immortal too but chose not to join Chang'e in heaven due to their differences in personalities.

The Rabbit on the Moon

A rabbit accompanies Chang'e on her lunar home. The story goes that when Houyi shot down nine suns with his arrows made from yew trees' branches (yew wood), one arrow remained unused because he realized there was no need to kill all ten suns since he had already saved Earth by killing nine of them.

This leftover arrow then transformed into a rabbit who became Chang'e's loyal companion on the moon.

Chinese Mythology's Influence

Chang'e's journey has inspired numerous artistic works throughout history. In traditional Chinese culture, paintings often depict her accompanied by a rabbit pounding herbs in an herbal mortar under a large tree – symbolizing longevity.

Moreover, Chang'e Festival or Qixi Festival is celebrated annually on China's seventh day of July (the seventh month according to China’s traditional calendar). It commemorates how two lovers overcame obstacles despite being separated by celestial realms; thus promoting love and harmony among couples.
