Shen Zhou's book and painting works have many artistic features. In terms of painting techniques, he initially inherited family traditions and studied under Du Qiong. Later, he absorbed the styles of various masters from the Song and Yuan dynasties, mainly inheriting the watercolor technique of Dong Yuan, Ju Ran, as well as the landscape paintings of Huizong and Wang Meng from the Yuan dynasty. He also incorporated the strong brushwork characteristic of Southern Song artists Li Gonglin, Liu Guandao, Ma Lin, and Xia Gui into his work.
Shen Zhou was known for creating a new style that combined rough brush strokes with subtle ink washes in his later years. His paintings are characterized by their powerful lines that evoke a sense of forceful energy while still maintaining delicate subtlety. The artist's overall mastery encompasses both technical skillfulness in line drawing and free-spirited expression through ink washes.
In essence, Shen Zhou is an exemplary figure who has made significant contributions to Chinese art history as a painter and calligrapher during Ming Dynasty times. Through his own unique approach to merging traditional styles with personal creativity he shaped an artistic legacy that continues to inspire generations after him.
His artwork can be found in many museums across China such as Beijing’s Palace Museum where there are several important pieces including "Following Dongju Mountain Water" (made in 1473), "Cangzhou Fun" scroll , "Zu Yi Tu", "Mo Cai Tu", "Wu You Tu".
The Nanjing Museum also houses some masterpieces like “Dong Zhuang” picture (created in 1506) when Shen Zhou was 81 years old.
The Liaoning Provincial Museum holds two remarkable artworks: one being “Bonsai Appreciation Picture Scroll” which depicts three men enjoying tea around a tree-stump pavilion surrounded by lush greenery; another is “Foggy River Terraced Mountains Picture Scroll”, created during Shen Zhou’s final year at age 82 showcasing freedom in his brushstrokes.
These works not only showcase his artistic prowess but they also reflect on how life influenced him throughout different stages within his career – whether it be early sketches or late masterworks - each piece represents a distinct era within this renowned artist's life story.
