The Legend of Chang'e and the Moon
In ancient Chinese mythology, there existed a beautiful goddess named Chang'e who lived on the moon. According to legend, Chang'e was once a mortal woman who consumed an elixir of immortality given to her by the Jade Emperor. The elixir granted her eternal life but also caused her to ascend to the heavens.
Chang'e's husband, Hou Yi, was a great archer who had shot down nine suns that threatened to destroy the world with their intense heat. He was rewarded with 108 arrows by the gods and became known as "the archer god." However, he eventually killed his own wife out of jealousy when she drank the elixir.
Filled with grief and guilt over killing his wife, Hou Yi threw away all 108 arrows into a river in order not to use them again for any evil deeds. As he did so, one arrow remained unbroken on his bowstring which led him back home where he found Chang'e alive in heaven.
