Wu Three Gate's surrender is a complex issue, and it was not just about betraying the Ming dynasty. He had lost his family and loved ones, which made him feel helpless.
Despite many others surrendering to the Qing dynasty during that time, such as Hong Chengchou, Zhu Changluo, Geng Jingzhong, Shang Zhixin and Fan Wencheng et al., why did Wu Three Gate become the most reviled figure? The answer lies in how history has been perceived over time.
As people began to analyze historical events more objectively and critically using evidence from texts and artifacts, they started to reevaluate figures like Cao Cao who were once considered villains but are now seen as opportunistic leaders in turbulent times. Similarly with stories of beautiful women accompanying powerful men; these tales captivated audiences without necessarily adhering strictly to historical facts.
The story of Wu Three Gate's betrayal is often embellished by popular culture for dramatic effect. His love for Chen Yulian was said to be so strong that he would risk everything for her - including sacrificing his country. This narrative became a cautionary tale used by the ruling elite to emphasize loyalty towards an emperor above all else.
In 1662, Wu Three Gate invaded Burma seeking the deposed Ming Emperor Yongli whom he eventually killed upon capture. These actions further solidified his reputation as a traitor who brutally eliminated those who stood against him - both on and off the battlefield.
Lastly, there was Wu Three Gate's ambition to establish himself as a regional power in Yunnan while maintaining ties with the Qing court. However this plan backfired when he rebelled against Kangxi Emperor after killing Yongli; leading ultimately to his own downfall.
Thus among many generals who surrendered their allegiance during that tumultuous period only one name stands out: WU THREE GATE - a man whose actions are remembered not just for their complexity but also because they were amplified by popular narratives over time.
